When I was in 11th grade I remember being tired of my girlfriends, bored of the constant comparisons, annoyed with the cattiness and jealousy. Side Note: I do believe what you see and dislike in others is a reflection of what you don’t like within yourself. One day on the big green hill during lunch I decided to leave the group. I walked towards the park bench at the bottom of the hill, enjoyed my lunch and didn’t talk to anyone. I remember all the girls looking down at me from the hill and thought they were thinking “is she mad at us?, why is she eating alone?, Who does she think she is?”....
After what I thought was an act of independence - I didn’t care anymore. Didn’t care what they would say and I didn’t want to think bad thoughts about them. That day I wanted to be woman, not a girl anymore that would put others down, gossip or hurt others.
The other day I was upset about business and reached out to a few fellow women entrepreneur friends. Every single one of them was so uplifting, supportive and gave me her full attention.
Now when I think of women relationships no longer does competition, jealousy or cattiness come to mind. Women friendship is about connection, support, sharing and non-judgment. It’s the friend that celebrates your successes, gives you loving feedback so you can improve, looks you in the eyes and tells you “I know”, lets you cry and doesn’t shame you or say “Don’t cry”.
Below are some photos from our collaboration shoot with PIYOGA. Another female ran company that we support and love.
Now go call one of your girl friends and express how grateful you are to have her in your life.
XOXO, Steph Villegas
