Celebrating World Sea Turtle Day Everyday ūüźĘ

Sea turtles plastic save the sea turtles with PI

Sea turtles and ocean conservation are very important to us and we wanted to take the time to really talk about what is happening underwater.

Let's be honest, the ocean is beautiful but under great distress given the rising water temperatures & a drastic increase of plastic in the oceans.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Plastic bags are petroleum-based and are not biodegradable.
  • Sea turtles and other marine creatures mistake plastics and other garbage as food (such as jellyfish) and ingest it. This mistake causes blockages within their digestive system and eventual death.
  • According to the US EPA, Americans use more than 380 billion plastic bags and wraps each year. It takes 12 million barrels of oil to produce this many bags. Worldwide, as many as one trillion plastic bags are used each year. This equates to 100 million barrels of oil!
  • A¬†2015 study¬†estimated more than 15 trillion¬† pieces of plastic trash are in the ocean, and growing every year.
  • Less than 5% of plastics are recycled worldwide!¬†

An increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
is a contributing factor to rising ocean temperatures since the ocean absorbs 93% of the heat from the atmosphere. When the water temperatures increase, the coral reef bleaches and can eventually die. The average temperature of the oceans are rising by 4 degrees Farenheight a year! In other words, our oceans are having a constant fever and it is destroying the coral reef and marine life.

Since we started PI, we have had the chance to work hands on with some amazing organizations and it has been such an eye opening experience.

Last January we went diving in the Great Barrier Reef and we were in shock to see how damaged the coral was and how few fish we saw.

The good news is...

There is still a chance to make a positive impact and this is what we want to bring attention to today for World Sea Turtle Day.

What can we do?

Stay educated. This is so important because it's necessary if we want to change our habits when it comes to plastic consumption and cutting down our CO2 output, which is directly affecting the rising ocean temperatures.

Time to NETFLIX & LEARN

ūüź†¬†Watch Chasing Coral¬†to understand what is happening underwater and how fast the coral is disappearing.¬†

Coral Reef are the most important and diverse ecosystems on the planet, supporting 25% of marine life in our ocean. At the moment, 75% of the coral reef in the world are in great danger.

ūüźĄ Watch¬†Cowspiracy. Learn about the impact the meat and dairy industry has on our environment.¬†Animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions, more than the combined exhaust from all transportation.

Did you know... Eating one burger consumes the same amount of water as 2 months of showering? ūüė≥

Start by making simple yet powerful changes

ūüĒÖ Switch to reef safe sunscreen without oxybenzone, a chemical that is very dangerous for coral reef and marine life.¬†

ūü•ô Start by introducing one vegetarian or vegan day into your week to move towards a more plant based diet.¬†

‚ôĽ Reduce your waste and remember to re-use & recycle - research where you can buy in bulk in your area, say no to plastic bags and straws. Remember to buy local and in season.¬†

ūüôĆ By supporting PI, you are helping us to make our mission to save the sea turtle a reality. We proudly donate 10% of our net profits to sea turtle and ocean conservation projects around the world.

If you know of any ocean conservation organization that needs help or if you want to help us during our next project, reach out to us at support@piyogapants.com

Thank you for your support,
